Umm al-Qura is Saudi Arabia’s official calendar. Where you live, the month may start a day earlier or later after local moon sighting; use the adjustment to match your local calendar.

What is a Hijri age?

Your Hijri age is how old you are when your life is counted in the Islamic calendar, also called the Hijri or lunar calendar, instead of the Gregorian calendar printed on most passports. The Hijri calendar starts from the Hijrah, the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. Its months follow the moon, so its years are shorter. Most people find that their Hijri age is one or two years more than their usual age.

The calculator above gives your age in both calendars side by side, in years, months and days. It also shows your Hijri date of birth with the Arabic month name, the weekday you were born, your next Hijri birthday with a countdown, and some numbers most calculators leave out: how many Ramadans and Fridays you have lived through, and your next five Hijri birthdays converted to Gregorian dates.

How is Hijri age calculated?

There are three steps:

  • Convert the date of birth. A Gregorian birth date is converted to the Hijri calendar. For example, 1 January 2000 was 24 Ramadan 1420 AH. If you already know your Hijri birth date, switch to the Hijri tab and enter it directly.
  • Find the Hijri date for today, or for any other date you choose under “More options”.
  • Count whole Hijri years, then months, then days between the two dates. When the day count would be negative, the calculator borrows the real length (29 or 30 days) of the previous Hijri month rather than assuming 30.

The calculator uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is built into modern browsers. On the rare old browser that lacks it, the tool falls back to the standard tabular (arithmetical) Islamic calendar and marks the result as approximate. You can also choose the tabular method yourself.

Why is my Hijri age higher than my Gregorian age?

A Hijri month runs from one new crescent moon to the next, which takes 29 or 30 days. Twelve of them make a year of 354 or 355 days. That is about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year of 365 or 366 days. Every Gregorian year, your Hijri age gets about 11 days further ahead, and after roughly 33 years the gap adds up to a whole extra year. As a rule of thumb:

Hijri age ≈ Gregorian age × 1.0307 (that is 365.2425 ÷ 354.367)

So someone who has just turned 33 is already about 34 in Hijri years, and a 66-year-old is about 68. For the same reason, your Hijri birthday comes about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year and moves through every season over a 33-year cycle.

Why might my result differ by one day?

Umm al-Qura is calculated in advance. In many countries, though, a new Islamic month starts only when the crescent has actually been sighted, so the local calendar can be a day ahead of or behind Umm al-Qura. If your family or community records Hijri dates by local sighting, open “More options” and apply a −1 or +1 day adjustment. Your date of birth, the ages and the birthday list all update together.

What is Hijri age used for?

  • Islamic milestones. Many scholars count religious maturity (bulugh) by lunar years when there are no physical signs, often citing 15 Hijri years. Knowing your exact Hijri age is useful for teaching children about prayer and fasting.
  • The age of 40. The Qur’an mentions reaching forty years (Surah al-Ahqaf 46:15), and many Muslims treat it as a time for reflection. In Hijri terms you reach it about 14 months before your 40th Gregorian birthday.
  • Official paperwork. Some government and employment forms in Saudi Arabia and other countries ask for a Hijri date of birth or age.
  • Family records and curiosity. Many families recorded births by the Hijri date, and it can be meaningful to know you were born in Ramadan or on a Friday.

If you need a date for a religious ruling, check it with a scholar or your local moon-sighting authority. Use this tool for everyday purposes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my age in Hijri years?

Enter your Gregorian date of birth in the calculator above, or switch to the Hijri tab and enter your Hijri birth date. The tool converts it with the Umm al-Qura calendar and counts complete Hijri years, months and days up to today. As a quick estimate, multiply your Gregorian age by 1.0307.

Why is my Hijri age more than my real age?

Both ages are real; they use different calendars. A Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days fewer than a Gregorian year, so more Hijri years fit into the same lifetime. The difference grows by about one year every 33 years.

What is my Hijri date of birth?

Enter your Gregorian birth date and the calculator shows your Hijri date of birth in English and Arabic, together with the weekday you were born. For example, someone born on 1 January 2000 was born on 24 Ramadan 1420 AH, a Saturday.

When is my next Hijri birthday?

The result shows your next Hijri birthday as a Gregorian date with a countdown in days, plus a list of the next five. Because the Hijri year is shorter, it comes about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. If you were born on the 30th and a month has only 29 days, the 29th is used.

Is this Hijri age calculator accurate?

It follows the official Umm al-Qura calendar, which is exact for the years it covers. A local moon-sighting calendar can differ by one day, and you can correct for that with the ±1 day adjustment. Everything is calculated in your browser, and your date of birth is never sent or stored.
